[WEEK 2] MY INFOGRAPHIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Although I've searched some infographics before class, I was really impressed by some other infographics showed by Dr. Glazewski and my classmates. I was also impressed by Dr. Appleman's talk about four categories of formal elements and I learned that any change of those formal elements   could make a big difference on how audience perceives information from your design. Recalling some of the designs I've made and the way I thought while designing, I realize that I did the common mistake Dr. Appleman mentioned, addressing on the form before thinking deep about the function of a design. Based on this mistake I had, my first and I think it's the most important inforgraphic design principle was created.

Here are my three infographic design principles:

1. Clearly present the main purpose of your design so that your audience has an idea of what information they will get.

---> Not clear about what the purpose and
information are by the way the data is
       showed.

---> A good example of clearly present the
       main purpose and information to
       audience.

2. Visualize your data in creative ways instead of highlighting standard graphs and numbers.

---> Not so impressive

---> A good example of better visualize your data
       in a creative way.

3. Utilize the contrast and effects of colors to emphasize important information.

---> Audience can not recognize the
       important information at first sight.

---> A good example of utilizing colors to
       convey outstanding message and
       representation.

  1. Greetings Janet,

I really like your infographic design principles. Especially, both the first and second are very important to me, too. I think that without presenting purpose clearly, any design will fail. Also, designing infographics in a creative way is very important in terms of visualization. I hope we can create infographics according to our principles.

    Best,

    1. Hi Ramzi,

Thank you so much for your feedback. Although I created my own instructional design principles and one of them was about being creative in your design, I've struggled with how to be creative in design. To be honest, I still feel vague about defining "creative". I think it's so subjective to say which is more creative than which. Especially in the design field. And I think there's no strict rules or standards for being creative for people to follow while developing or designing a product. Anyways, it's just my thought. ; )

  2. Designing infographics isn’t purely about how visually appealing they are, but rather how well is information presented. There’s no need for a whole spectrum of colors if the audience isn’t able to determine what exactly is being presented. However, an infographic purpose is defeated if its design is not well-crafted. The principles you’ve arrived at are good and could prove to be useful to anyone looking to make their own designs.
